Operations at Camp Columbia were suspended in November 2011 in order to prevent risking the health & safety of those leading or participating in on site programs. Non-potable water and persistent gas leaks were among the primary concerns. The suspension provides a Sabbath period in which a long term solution can be sought. A comprehensive maintenance list has been compiled and is being updated and prioritized.
A part-time maintenance technician has been hired to look after high priority maintenance items. Further, contracted repairs of the water system have been completed. The chlorination system was updated and a bank of Ultra-Violet lights were installed for further sanitation. The two most recent water samples have returned drinkable water!
The Diocese aims to avoid applying band-aid solutions which perpetuate the problem of deferred maintenance in favor of considering a long term operational model.
We are continuing to offer summer camp programming under the name Camp in the Community. This program is not intended to replace Camp Columbia but to provide summer ministry in a new way.
The Bishop has appointed a Task Team of experts to undertake a review and visioning process for Camp Columbia. The first meeting took place in April. The team will be visiting the facilities in late May and completing a review of the property. A progress report will be submitted to Diocesan Council by May 31st.
A caretaker come forward to look after Camp Columbia for June through August. We are thankful to those willing to volunteer their support Camp Columbia in a variety of ways.
